The annual Scout Popcorn Sale is going to be better than ever this year!
More options! More variety! And more ways to earn money! Here is some great information about what’s happening
this year – there is a lot of exciting new stuff to help your unit earn the
most money possible!
After an extensive review of available
products, quality, and cost, the York-Adams Area Council decided to change
vendors for the fall sale. The new company is called Camp Masters and
is located in Indiana. Camp Masters is an officially approved BSA
vendor and they have served a number of councils, particularly in the South
and Midwest. This process gave the council the opportunity to review
nearly every detail related to the sale, and this year’s sale has been
designed to help units earn the most money that they can. Everyone
knows how valuable every fundraising dollar is this year.
Any
Scouters who want their units to sell a great product and earn more money,

Making
sure the new popcorn vendor provided comparable, quality products
was an important step in the study process. So, a blind taste
test was held this past spring where several popcorn products were
sampled. Over 100 Scouters participated and got to taste
microwave, cheese, and caramel corn from both Trail’s End and Camp
Masters.
The Camp Masters products proved not just to be
comparable, but they won in every product category in every
district. The council-wide results easily indicated that Camp
Masters was the favorite! If our customers like the popcorn as
much as well do, this sale will be a huge hit!
Check out the
results for yourself on the charts on the right. Taste tests
were done at April roundtables and in the Scout Shop.
Over 93% of the Scouters who participated in the taste test
survey indicated that variety of product choices should be an
important part in selecting the popcorn vendor. Since the
council had always sold a wide assortment of products, it was
important to maintain strong product variety. Unfortunately,
Trail’s End had reduced its product offerings for 2009, including
items that sold well in our council.
The Camp Masters line
allows us to continue all our old favorites - like chocolate covered
corn, kettle corn, and large variety packs. Plus, we’ll have
the opportunity to offer some new items like the delicious butter
roasted summer corn and a fat-free snack size microwave popcorn.
Overall, there will be 12 different popcorn varieties available.
Over the years, we heard comments that people wanted to include
something other than popcorn in the sale. Last year we added
the candle sale which we’re going to continue again this year!
Not every unit that sold popcorn participated in this portion of the
sale. However, those that did had a good experience. In
2008, units sold more than $25,000 in candle products.
Through the Camp Masters company, we will also add an option of
magazine vouchers which may also be sold along with the popcorn
sale. The magazine vouchers are advertised on a side-panel on
the actual popcorn order form, and there are $10 and $20 options.
Just like the popcorn and candles, units will get the same
commission on these items as well. So, participating units
have three different options to work with in planning this year’s
sale.
