Blood Drive 2010

American Red Cross LogoAs part of the Good Turn for America, Scouts and families in the York-Adams Area Council will be partnering with the American Red Cross to conduct the sixth annual GTFA blood drive.  Last year, this blood drive helped thousands of people in the York County, Adams County and greater Baltimore areas.  Plans are underway to make this year’s drive be the biggest yet.  The help of all families, friends, and past donors will be needed.

The Blood Drive is the second phase of the council's Good Turn for America initiative, following the Scouting for Food collection.  As was done in previous years, there will be numerous blood donation sites throughout the council area during the month of January.

Scouts are currently soliciting friends, family, and neighbors to sign-up to donate blood at one of these locations.  Several troops are setting up sign-up tables after Sunday worship services at their chartered organizations.  All Scouts who sign-up donors receive the blood drive segment of the Council’s Good Turn for America patch.

This blood drive is extremely important to the Red Cross as January is usually a month when the blood supply is low.  The Red Cross supplies all or some blood to each of the hospitals in the council.

While the Red Cross takes care of the actual blood donating, a small number of Scouts and Scouters are needed to volunteer at the donation sites.  These Scouts will assist with check-in and at the canteen area.

Blood Collection Facts:

  • Only 5% of our population donates blood—but 95% of the population will need blood at some point in their lives.
  • O– is used in emergency situations and a single shock trauma victim can use up to 100 units of Type O– blood in less than one hour.
  • A single donation of one unit of blood can help save 3 to 4 lives.

The process for Scouting groups to get involved is highlighted in the blood drive guidebook.  Questions about the blood drive or the registration process should be directed to Gretchen Weekley at the council service center.

Extra copies of blood drive resource materials are available below.

Persons wishing to donate blood during this effort can sign up for a site location and time when contacted by a Scout who is participating in the campaign.  Or, prospective donors can sign up using our on-line form.  Donors signing up on-line will receive an e-mail confirmation for the location and time they have been confirmed for to make their donation.  A complete listing of blood donation collection sites, including hours of operation, are also available on-line.
